People think I’m obsessed with Final Fantasy VII. To quote Clark Gable, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn!” Although I am somewhat disappointed at the absence of appreciation for great storytelling, this, I know is mainly attributed to the game’s sharp learning curve.
You see, to enjoy a film, all you have to do is sit there. But to enjoy a video game there takes some actual brainpower, decision making capabilities, and hand-eye coordination. Role-playing games like Final Fantasy VII require even greater cerebral output, but the rewards greatly outweigh the effort.
My fascination with the game is not only artistic, but sentimental. Next month (November), fourteen years ago, I received a copy of this wonderful masterpiece and I enjoyed it religiously; thanks mom.
At that age, I was young, cocky, and careless. And my daily grind was NOT molested by the seeds of politics, global warming, and racism. Playing Final Fantasy reminds me of a great interactive experience with amazing storytelling, memorable characters and vast worlds, but also a sacred time in my life untouched by the pressures and responsibilities of today.
I may not be as innocent as I once was, but playing Final Fantasy VII keeps me young; besides, it’s healthier than doing crack cocaine.
